Pickford keen to build on Ancelotti start

Jordan Pickford is keen for Everton to build momentum under Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti enjoyed a winning start to his Goodison Park reign against Burnley, which came after a four-game unbeaten run with caretaker Duncan Ferguson.

Saturday’s trip to Newcastle offers the Italian a chance to become the first Blues manager since David Moyes to record opening back-to-back victories.

While Pickford is at a loss as to why Everton’s form dipped in the early part of the season, he believes their recent form can now serve as a springboard.

He said: “I don’t know why that’s been or whatever but we move on.

“We’ve been on a good run of games now. We’ve had tough fixtures and come through that with good results and clean sheets.

“It’s all about momentum now.

“We’ve got a quick turnaround to go to Newcastle on Saturday and there’s another three points that need to be picked up hopefully.”

As a former Sunderland player, Pickford is already braced for a difficult afternoon at St James’ Park against his boyhood club’s local rivals.

But the England international admits he relishes the occasion and hailed the transformative effect of his old boss Steve Bruce on Tyneside this season.

“I get a lot of stick but it’s what football’s about. You’ve just got to enjoy the experience,” added Pickford.

“I know Steve Bruce was getting a lot of pelters [there] but I had him at Sunderland and knew what a top bloke and top manager he was when I was there so credit to him.

“Of course we know it’s going to be tough. They’re in a good patch at the moment but it’s all about us developing and getting better.

“When we go there, we need to be hard to beat and if we can’t win the game then don’t get beat.”
