Liverpool have won the FIFA Club World Cup after defeating Flamengo.
Roberto Firmino’s extra-time strike proved enough to give the Reds an upper hand over their Brazilian counterparts during Saturday’s final in Qatar.
Firmino had also scored a decisive late goal in a hard-fought semi-final against Mexican outfit Monterrey to reach the showpiece at Khalifa Stadium.
It ended Anfield’s 38-year wait to be crowned world champions, having lost their three previous appearances in the competition dating back to 1981.
The victory ensured that Jurgen Klopp’s side became the first English side to win the Club World Cup, Champions League and Super Cup in succession.
But the occasion was overshadowed by a potential injury lay-off for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after he landed awkwardly on his ankle in the game.
“A wonderful night for us, the club, for everybody who is with us,” said Klopp.
“There are always things, of course, that are not so positive because it was not the last game of the season and Oxlade-Chamberlain got injured in one situation. We play in five days again, so that’s a tough period.
“But the boys – game after game after game – they really show their desire to make the next step, show their desire to win the next game, show their desire to win the next challenge and I’m really happy about that.
“Where it will lead us? I have no idea.
“For tonight, we couldn’t do more than winning this game, winning it the first time for this wonderful club, the Club World Cup.
“I said before the game I don’t know exactly how it would feel. Now I can say it’s outstanding, absolutely sensational.
“I’m so proud of the boys and it couldn’t be better.”
