Liverpool have been drawn against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League’s last 16.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will return to the scene of last season’s triumph when they step out in the knock-out stage of Europe’s premier club competition next year.
The Wanda Metropolitano is set to again host the Reds as they take on Atleti on Tuesday, February 18 with the return fixture at Anfield on Wednesday, March 11.
It will mark almost a decade since both teams last faced off in a competitive fixture following their Europa League semi-final clash in the 2009/10 season.
Liverpool were denied a place in the competition’s inaugural showpiece by goals in each leg by Diego Folan to seal Atleti’s progress on away goals in a 2-2 draw.
Ex-Manchester United striker Forlan’s 103rd-minute strike at Anfield cancelled out efforts by Alberto Aquilani in normal time and Yossi Benayoun in extra-time.
“It’s an interesting draw,” admitted Klopp.
“Before the draw I actually thought it would be Madrid – either one of the two clubs – and that’s the way it is.
“Madrid is the place where we only have fantastic memories, all of us, so that’s great, but this time we play Atletico there and it’s their home ground.
“It’s a tough one, but if you go through all of the draws, there are pretty much four or five potential finals already in the last 16.
“So, really, really good; a good draw, a difficult game like it should be, but how we most of the time think and say, I don’t think Mr Simeone is running through his living room and is happy that he got Liverpool.
“It will be a tough game. Two teams who are used to playing intense football, different styles and slightly different organisation of course.
“But both are ready for intensity and that makes it pretty tough for both.”
