Liverpool have been drawn away to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.
Jurgen Klopp’s side booked their place in the last eight with a penalty shoot-out win over Arsenal on Wednesday after holding the visitors in a thrilling 5-5 draw.
But the date of the Reds’ trip to Villa Park remains undetermined due to their involvement in FIFA’s Club World Cup on the week commencing December 16.
Discussions are ongoing between Anfield chiefs and the EFL about a suitable week on which to play the fixture, with January 8 currently appearing likely.
The competition’s semi-final stage will begin on that same week, meaning both sides are playing a round behind their potential opponents in the final.
Klopp warned that Liverpool may be forced to withdraw from the Carabao Cup, where they are record winners, if a sensible date for the game cannot be reached.
“There are two Carabao Cup windows in January and though it will be complicated and inconvenient it ought to be possible to use those,” said an EFL spokesman.
“We were actually talking to Liverpool about the possibility before their game against Arsenal and were a little surprised by the comments the manager made afterwards.”
