A freak injury has left Adrian doubtful for Liverpool’s trip to Southampton.
Adrian became the hero of the Reds’ UEFA Super Cup victory over Chelsea on Wednesday after saving a decisive penalty by Tammy Abraham in the shoot-out.
The former West Ham goalkeeper had to be rushed into a debut for his new club just four days after signing in the wake of Alisson’s calf injury against Norwich.
But Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Adrian is now also facing the prospect of joining the Brazil international on the sidelines for Saturday’s game at St Mary’s.
According to the Liverpool manager, the stopper suffered a swollen ankle when a pitch invader collided with the celebrating players at Istanbul’s Besiktas Park.
“When we were all together [celebrating], a supporter jumped over something, was chased by some security guys, slipped and kicked his ankle. Crazy,” said Klopp.
“Yesterday it was swollen. Today I spoke to him and it was better but we have to see.”
He added: “There’s no doubt about how much we love our fans but if they could stop doing [pitch invasions].
“We played against Norwich, someone was running on the pitch. Istanbul as well.
“It’s not funny. I know it has uses like the girl in the Champions League final who made money from it but I don’t know what we can do against it.
“I like the fact that we don’t have fences in the stadium but that means there’s a lot of responsibility for the supporters as well.
“If one person cannot hesitate or stop himself then the people around should do it because it’s not funny.
“In this case now, it’s possible to watch it and it’s crazy to think ‘wow, how can something like this happen?’.”
Should Adrian be ruled out for the trip to the South Coast, stand-in Andy Lonergan will become the oldest English player to debut in the Premier League.
The veteran Football League stopper has been drafted in following Alisson’s injury and would set a new league record at the age of 35 years and 302 days.
Liverpool are also set to be without Naby Keita when they take on Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side after he picked up a muscle strain on the eve of the Super Cup.
“[He is] not available,” said Klopp
“It’s a muscle thing and we don’t know exactly how long it will take.
“But he’s not available [for Southampton].”
