Phil Jagielka has confirmed that his 12-year association with Everton is over.
Jagielka’s existing deal with the Blues will expire at the end of June and had been the subject of discussions over a potential extension with manager Marco Silva.
But the veteran defender failed to reach a positive conclusion over his future at Goodison Park, where he had made 385 appearances since summer 2007.
“It’s been hard to confirm my situation for next season as that decision hadn’t been fully made by the club until now,” Jagielka wrote on Instagram.
“Unfortunately my journey at Everton has come to an end after 12 fantastic seasons.
“I have been lucky enough to play over 380 games and lucky enough to be club captain for 6 years.
“All I can say is thanks to all the players I’ve played alongside, all the staff that have helped me in their own way, the chairman and of course the amazing fans.
“Wishing everyone associated with this special clubs the very best for the future.”
Jagielka became a mainstay in Everton’s back line under David Moyes and was awarded the captaincy by Roberto Martinez following Phil Neville’s retirement.
Bill Kenwright, the club’s chairman, led the tributes to the outgoing 36-year-old.
He said: “Jags’ is quite simply one of our greatest ever servants.
“From the day he joined us in July 2007, he has epitomised what it is to be an Evertonian and will remain someone who embodies the spirit and values of the Blues.
“Who will ever forget that momentous afternoon at Wembley when he stepped up and slotted home the penalty to send us to the Cup Final, or the day he scored one of the best Merseyside Derby goals of all time?
“And, of course, every Evertonian shared his pride when he became the first Everton player to lead out an England side back in 2015.
“As our captain and leader he has been a role model for the younger players coming through our ranks.
“Off the field he has always been a truly fantastic ambassador for our club and a great supporter of our charity.
“I know I speak for all Evertonians when I send ‘Jags’ our heartfelt thanks for everything he has done for our club, on and off the pitch, and wish him well for the future.”
