Liverpool quartet make PFA Team of the Year

Liverpool have seen four players named in the PFA’s Team of the Year.

Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and full-backs Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold were included in the line-up voted for by their fellow professionals.

Holland captain Van Dijk becomes the first player to feature in the Team of the Year from his homeland since Manchester United’s Jaap Stam back in 2001.

The quartet also constitute the Reds’ biggest inclusion in a single season PFA team since 1990 as they remain in the hunt for the Premier League title.

Jurgen Klopp saluted his players’ achievement but believes several of their teammates, including Mohamed Salah and Georginio Wijnaldum, also merited inclusion.

He said: “It’s impressive and deserved as well. For me, my team is the team of the season as well.

“From my point of view there could have been four, five, six or seven more players involved. They all played an outstanding season.

“But the players in the Premier League make the decision.

“It is even more special when you are in the team of the season as a defender because it’s the players you played against and felt uncomfortable against.

That’s cool. Deserved, but Mo would have deserved it again, he’s up there with the top scorers.

“Gini played an incredible season, and if they voted today then Hendo (Jordan Henderson) would probably be in.

“It’s the players’ decision. We have to accept it. We are very happy for them.”

Van Dijk and Mane are in the running to win the PFA Player of the Year award while Alexander-Arnold has been nominated for the Young Player accolade.

The winners of both categories are set to be announced on Sunday evening at the organisation’s annual awards ceremony in London.
