A newsagent was stabbed during an attempted armed robbery in Walton.
The incident took place at ‘Everton News’ on City Road shortly before 8pm on Sunday when a lone man walked in with what is believed to be a kitchen knife.
He demanded money from the newsagent before stabbing him in the chest. A member of the public intervened before the offender left the shop empty-handed.
Detectives are looking for the man, who is described as being in his late teens with a slim build, after he was last seen heading in the direction of Cowley Road.
He was described wearing a coat with his hood up and had brown wavy hair around his fringe area.
The newsagent was taken to hospital where he is being treated for a stab wound to his chest. His condition is described as stable and is not believed to be life threatening.
Detective Inspector Debbie Tipton, said: “The investigation is in its early stages and we are keen to speak to anyone who was in the City Road area around 8pm this evening and witnessed the incident, or saw anyone behaving suspiciously.
“This shopkeeper provides a service for the local community and it was a brave member of the public who intervened to prevent the robbery, and the shopkeeper from potentially suffering further injury.
“If you live or work locally and have home or business CCTV, or were driving past and have dashcam footage which could assist our investigation, please contact us as you can. .
“Knife crime will not be tolerated under any circumstances and we will do our utmost to bring those responsible to justice, help us to find the person responsible for this despicable crime.”
House-to-house inquiries are being carried out in the area and detectives will be examining CCTV footage in a bid to identify the offender.
