Klopp: Liverpool must learn to handle title pressure

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool’s players need to learn how to handle the pressure of the Premier League title race.

Sunday’s goalless draw with Manchester United saw the Reds return to the summit but were unable to take full advantage of their game in-hand.

Klopp’s side appeared favourites to emerge victorious from the Old Trafford clash after their hosts succumbed to a series of injury problems during the first half.

Another difficult week awaits the current leaders with a home game against Watford followed by a trip to Everton for the 233rd Merseyside derby.

And the Liverpool manager has urged his players to embrace the challenge of ending a 29-year wait for the title by unseating champions Manchester City.

He said: “Of course there is pressure but from my point of view, it’s very positive.

“It’s pressure but I don’t have to play. I just have to sit here and say dumb things – that’s easy! The boys have to learn in these situations and the only way we can do it is with passion.

“The heart and soul of this club is passion. Watford on Wednesday night is another chance, then there is a derby which is always an emotional game, passionate.

“Today we had to fight and we didn’t do that exactly how we should have. You can say that’s not class but we know where we are coming from and now where we are.”

Klopp also revealed that Liverpool are waiting to learn the full extent of Roberto Firmino’s injury after the striker departed from Old Trafford on crutches.

Firmino was withdrawn on the half-hour mark after appearing to roll his ankle.

“Unfortunately, I have no clue. It was something with the ankle, that’s for sure,” admitted Klopp.

“Bobby said at first he could carry on but then he showed it didn’t work.

“I don’t know exactly; it is Bobby, so it will be quicker than with all the others but first we have to know what it is exactly – and we don’t know at the moment.”
