Walton prison staff walk out over safety fears

HMP Liverpool officers have walked out over health and safety concerns.

Staff at the Walton prison staged the protest in the wake of a colleague being dismissed following an investigation into using reasonable force on an inmate.

It has been claimed that the officer acted in self-defence amid ongoing fears over a rising level of violence from prisoners at the facility in recent months and years.

Mark Fairhurst, national chair of the Prison Officer Association, confirmed that Thursday’s walk-out will continue until prison bosses choose to act on the situation.

“This situation today can be easily resolved,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“Staff have a right to protect themselves and they need assurances that they will be supported when they try to protect themselves.”
