A man has been extradited and charged over the attack on Liverpool fan Sean Cox.
Mr Cox suffered life-changing brain injuries when he was assaulted outside Anfield before last season’s Champions League semi-final with AS Roma.
Simone Mastrelli was detained on a European arrest warrant in the Italian capital ahead of appearing at Sefton Magistrates’ Court on Friday afternoon.
The 30-year-old from Rome stands accused of assault and violent disorder in connection with the attack on Mr Cox in Walton Breck Road on April 24 last year.
Mastrelli was remanded in custody until his plea hearing on March 1.
Two men have already been jailed for their part in the attack on the father-of-three.
Both Daniele Sciuso, 29, and Filippo Lombardi, 21, were handed prison sentences on violent disorder charges but the latter was cleared of assault.
