Robertson handed improved Liverpool deal

Andy Robertson has signed a new long-term deal with Liverpool.

Robertson becomes the sixth player to be rewarded with an improved contract at Anfield future since developing into an influential figure for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson and Joe Gomez have all penned extension with the Reds in recent months.

The left-back agreed a fresh five-year deal until summer 2024 after a remarkable 18-month period in which he has also been installed as Scotland captain.

Since his £8 million arrival from Hull City, Robertson has become a permanent fixture in Liverpool’s defence and key to their current Premier League title bid.

He said: “As soon as the club came to me, it was a no-brainer for me.

“I want to stay here, so as soon as they put an offer on the table it was signed as quickly as that.

“It was a pretty easy contract for me and I’m sure for the club as well.

“We both agreed very quickly, that’s why it’s been done so quickly.”

Liverpool’s sporting director Michael Edwards took the lead on negotiations with the player’s representatives to tie down his future to the club.

It is understood that attention will now shift to a new deal for Trent Alexander-Arnold in light of the homegrown defender’s progress for both club and country.

Alexander-Arnold has already signed two extensions in the past 18 months but was an integral figure in England’s World Cup squad and Liverpool’s run to last season’s Champions League final.

The 20-year-old is currently sidelined for up to a month with a knee injury sustained before last weekend’s win over Brighton and Hove Albion.
