Virgil van Dijk insists Liverpool’s do-or-die Champions League scenario is their own fault.
Jurgen Klopp’s side must either win 1-0 or by two clear goals in Tuesday’s Group C finale with Napoli to secure their place in the tournament’s knock-out stages.
Last season’s finalists have made hard work of their return to Europe’s elite club competition with defeats in all three of their group fixtures away from home.
Although Van Dijk believes the situation is recoverable against the Serie A giants, the defender has refused to sugar-coat the Reds’ continental shortcomings.
He said: “It is our own fault, but we have a way to get out of this.
“We have not been at our best in the Champions League so we deserve to be in this position. If we don’t win we don’t deserve to be in the Champions League.
“Hopefully that is not going to happen. Hopefully we are going to progress and show that we definitely belong in there.
“At Liverpool there is always a lot of pressure, but it is good pressure.
“You want to play in these circumstances. You want to be getting the job done before (the last game) but now we are here.”
