Diouf ‘regrets’ joining Liverpool over Barcelona

El-Hadji Diouf claims that he regrets joining Liverpool over Barcelona and Manchester United.

The Senegal international’s three-year stay at Anfield was beset by controversy following a £10 million move from RC Lens in the wake of the 2002 World Cup.

Diouf has routinely attacked several of his former Reds teammates, including Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, in the years following his 2005 exit.

But the ex-striker, 37, alleges that he had offers to move to both Old Trafford and the Nou Camp before becoming one of Gerard Houllier’s failed signings.

“I can say today that the shirt that I regret wearing the most was Liverpool’s,” Diouf told RMC Sport.

“Because if I were to do that part of my career again, I would have gone to FC Barcelona or Manchester United.

“At the time, they wanted me too.”

Diouf scored just six times in 80 appearances for Liverpool but is best remembered for earning a two-match ban after spitting on a Celtic supporter.
