Man attacks police van in four-hour rooftop stand-off

A man had a stand off with police in Wirral in which he dismantled a chimney stack and threw pieces at police.

The man climbed on to the roof on Sunday morning and was seen shouting and throwing roof tiles from his position.

Police armed with riot shields were seen talking to the man in attempts to convince him to come down from the roof of the house.

During the incident at least three police vehicles were damaged as the man threw rough tiles and bricks from the chimney stack from the roof to the police vehicles below.

The man was also heard shouting obscenities to those watching the incident. In one particular video he was seen threatening to burn a house down.

It is understood that the man requested a cigarette and a McDonald’s meal before he would come down from the roof.

Around 1.15pm this afternoon, the man agreed to work with the authorities and come down from the roof.

The 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage.
