Walton prisoner dies within 48 hours of arrival

An inmate at Walton Prison has died within 48 hours of arriving at the prison. This is the third fatality at the prison in four weeks.

Damien Anderson arrived at the prison 48 hours before he was found unresponsive in his cell on A wing of Walton Prison.

The 40-year-old man had died by the time members of staff had reached him to start life saving procedures.

Two other prisoners, Ian Galtress and Paul Jones also died whilst in Walton Prison in the last four weeks.

The Ministry of Justice have now launched an investigation in to the prison which will be completed by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

A prison spokesperson said “HMP Liverpool prisoner Damien Anerson died in prison on 24 October 2018. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. His next of kin have been informed”

“As with all deaths in custody there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman

Figures released by the Ministry of Justice in 2017 showed that 14 inmates have died at Walton Prison over a two year period. Both suicide and natural causes were listed as reasons for death.

In January a report was released that described the prison as “Britain’s worst jail”. The prison is said to be infested with cockroaches and rats.  One area of the jail was said to be so dirty that it could not be cleaned.

During a surprise visit last year prisoners were found to be living in squalid conditions with exposed wiring and unclean lavatories.

Former prison governor, Peter Francis, was removed within days of the damning inspection and has been replaced with former prison officer Pia Sinha.
