Business studies is a great degree that is versatile enough to be used in a range of careers. Whether you want to enter business yourself or you plan to work in the finance departments of public or third-sector organisations, picking up skills in management, leadership and much more is essential no matter what your job plans are. Here in Britain, there are lots of locations to pick from when it comes to finding a place to study: from top northern cities such as Manchester and Liverpool to the bright lights of London, you’ve got plenty of choice no matter what your preferred area might be. Read on to discover what each of these cities can offer a student just starting on their business studies journey.
Liverpool
Liverpool is, of course, one of Britain’s finest cities, and its educational institutions are no exception. At Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), for example, students can study everything from marketing to human resources as part of the course. The University of Liverpool’s business management option is one of the world’s very best, meanwhile: it has been accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and it’s one of just a handful of places worldwide to have received this honour. With plenty of nightlife on offer in areas such as Stanley Street and Bold Street, there’s more to Liverpool than just excellent educational facilities: the overall student experience here is also great.
Manchester
Just down the M62 in Manchester lies one of the UK’s major business studies hubs. Choosing the London School of Business and Finance (LSBF) for financial training is a great idea as it offers a cosmopolitan edge. It was set up in London, but it has a number of campuses elsewhere, including Manchester and around the world. The Manchester branch offers a range of courses, including CIMA and ACCA qualifications for those who want to enter accountancy. Alternatively, universities such as Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan both have relevant courses on offer – so it’s clear that this is a business-focused city.
London
No analysis of Britain’s business studies scene would be complete without looking at what London has to offer, though. Top universities here, such as Imperial College, offer business studies courses, and there are plenty of inspirational teachers (with extensive business experience themselves) delivering the lectures. While the educational standards on offer here are high, perhaps the distinct advantage of studying business at a London university is that it means that you’ll be proximate to many top businesses offering internships, placements and more – so you can fill your summers with CV-friendly work.
Studying business in the UK is a great choice, but when choosing a city, it’s likely that you’ll shift focus depending on exactly what you’re looking for. Perhaps you’re seeking a certain type of qualification, for example, or maybe you require a certain facility or provision – such as close proximity to a number of major internship suppliers – in your student city. Whatever you need, there’ll be a city and a course for you somewhere in the UK.
