Man charged over police officer axe attack

A man has been charged after swinging an axe at a police officer in Wallasey.

Merseyside Police were originally called to a disturbance at a house in Turret Road on Wednesday evening, where the incident subsequently took place.

Another man, aged 30, suffered cuts to his head in the incident but his injuries were described as not life threatening.

Detectives have now charged Stuart Whittaker with attempted murder, wounding, making threats to kill and threats with an offensive weapon.

No further action will be taken against a 31-year-old woman who was arrested at the scene on suspicion of affray and assisting an offender.

Whittaker, 34, from Whitby in Ellesmere Port is due to appear at Wirral Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
