Drunk jailed for urinating on rough sleeper

A drunk who urinated on a sleeping homeless man has been jailed.

Stephen Gibney was sentenced after urinating in the face of rough sleeper Richard Stanley ‘as a joke’ on a night out in Liverpool city centre.

Liverpool Magistrates’ Court heard that Gibney had taunted Mr Stanley during the incident on Whitechapel during the early hours of May 18 this year.///

Jane Stacey, prosecuting, told the court that the 32-year-old from Childwall’s response to the homeless man saying he was going to call the police was: “I just took a p*** on you – what are you going to do about it?”

Nearby commuters appalled at Gibney’s actions shouted at him before he returned offering to fight Mr Stanley, adding the threat “I’ll p*** on you again”.

He claims to have had no recollection of the incident and pleaded guilty to assault by beating.

In sentencing, District Judge Wendy Lloyd said: “This was this man’s home where he was lying with his sleeping bag getting shelter…I treat this as an attack in his home.

“He woke with urine in his face and you threatened him with violence and you carried on urinating.

“Apparently to you and your companion this was just a joke.”

Gibney will serve eight weeks behind bars.
