Central Library evacuated in knifeman chase

Liverpool’s Central Library had to be evacuated in a police chase with a knifeman.

Officers from British Transport Police had chased the man from Lime Street station on Saturday after concerns that he was concealing a bladed weapon.

The man ran in the direction of Central Library, which saw the entire building evacuated as a significant police presence arrived on the scene.

A 19-year-old from Garston was subsequently arrested on possession of an offensive weapon and has been taken into police custody.

“At 3.25pm a man made off from station staff and they believed he had a knife,” confirmed a BTP spokesperson.

“He was pursued by officers into the library.

“He has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. He was detained at 3.47pm.”
