Liverpool draw Roma in Champions League semi-final

Liverpool will face Roma in the Champions League semi-final.

Mohamed Salah will face his former club as the Reds aim to book their place in the final for Europe’s elite club competition next month in Kiev.

The Serie A giants have previously faced Liverpool on three occasions competitively, most famously in the final of this tournament back in May 1984.

Roma hosted the Anfield club in the showpiece fixture and lost 4-2 on penalties after drawing 1-1 and remaining deadlocked in extra time.

More recently they sides faced off in successive years with Liverpool triumphing in a two-legged UEFA Cup knock-out tie in February 2001.

They were paired together again in the Champions League’s group stages the following season as Gerard Houllier’s side progressed to the quarter-final.

“Because I knew I’d have to say something, I tried to think about what I feel,” said Klopp.

“But it was not that I thought, ‘Thank God, not Bayern; thank God, not Real Madrid; yippee, Roma’ or the other way around.

“It is just the draw and I know it is very exciting, but it is good because the most important news is we are still in the competition.

“Whichever opponent we would have got, I would have said there is a chance because it is football – so there is a chance against Roma.

“But if anybody think this is the easiest draw then I cannot help this person – they obviously didn’t see both games against Barcelona.”

Anfield will host the first leg on Tuesday, April 24 with the corresponding fixture taking place at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday, May 2.

Should they overcome Roma, Liverpool would face the winner of the other semi-final between Bayern Munich and current holders Real Madrid.
