Gylfi Sigurdsson may not play again for Everton this season due to a knee injury.
The Iceland international sustained the ligament problem during the Blues’ 2-0 win over Brighton on Saturday.
Sigurdsson underwent treatment midway through the Goodison Park encounter before continuing to play, which may have aggravated the injury further.
The 28-year-old will be assessed by medical staff this week to determine the full extent of the issue, which could rule him out for the rest of Everton’s season.
A place in Iceland’s World Cup campaign is also on the line for Sigurdsson, with the prospect that the injury may prompt a lengthy lay-off if surgery is required.
“Gylfi Sigurdsson will see a specialist this evening to determine a timeframe for recovery from the knee injury he sustained in Saturday’s Premier League win over Brighton at Goodison,” an Everton statement confirmed.
“It is anticipated that the 28-year-old Icelandic international could be sidelined for several weeks but it will only be after consulting with the specialist that a definitive timeframe will be known.”
Since securing a club-record £40 million move from Swansea last summer, he has recorded six goals in 33 appearances during a debut season at Everton.
