Holgate risks FA charge over homophobic tweets

Mason Holgate could face disciplinary action over alleged homophobic tweets.

Holgate is set to be interviewed by the Football Association as part of their investigation into his claims of racism in Everton’s FA Cup defeat to Liverpool.

The Blues defender appeared to accuse Roberto Firmino of racially abusing him during the first half of last week’s third round tie between the sides at Anfield.

However Holgate himself now faces the possibility of an inquiry into comments posted on his Twitter account, which was deleted in the aftermath of the game.

The 21-year-old defender was forced to deactivate his profile on the social networking site due to a backlash of comments from rival football supporters.

Several users had shared tweets he had made in 2012 and 2013, two years before sealing a move to Goodison Park, with apparent homophobic slurs.

Holgate risks a fine and suspension if found guilty by the FA, who are aware of the remarks made when he was between 16 and 17 years old at the time.

Watford striker Andre Gray was banned for four games while playing for Burnley in 2016 when historic homophobic tweets posted in 2012 were uncovered.
