Rough sleeper’s teen killer asks for reduced sentence

A High Court judge has allowed the name of a man who beat a rough sleeper to death when he was 14-years-old to be released.

Simon Evans beat a rough sleeper to death and has now requested Mr Justice Goose review the minimum custody term that was handed to him when sentenced for the murder.

Lawyers representing Evans has asked that the judge anonymise his decision that was made today at the High Court in London however the judge refused the request after deciding that there were no proper grounds for granting an anonymity order.

Simon Evans was convicted with two friends of murdering 53-year-old Kevin Bennett following a trial at Liverpool Crown Court in Feburary 2013.

The trial heard how Evans and his two friends attacked Mr Bennett as he slept rough at the back of Iceland in Walton in August 2012.

The judge at the trial stated that Evans must serve just under eight years before being considered for parole and should stay in custody until at least February 2021.

Evans had requested that the minimum term be reduced however Mr Justice Goose today ruled against him stating that there had not been a significant reduction in the risk posed by Evans.
