Mo Farah wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Mo Farah has been crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2017.

The athlete beat motorcycle racer Jonathan Rea and amputee sprint runner Johnnie Peacock to the award, which was hosted on the Liverpool waterfront.

A 10,000-strong audience packed into the city’s Echo Arena as a number of other accolades were presented to celebrate a memorable 12 months of sport.

Jessica Ennis-Hill was presented with a Lifetime Achievement award after she bowed out of athletics with two Olympic medals and three World Championship titles.

England Women’s cricket team received the Team of the Year accolade in recognition of their dramatic comeback against India in the World Cup final.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce and Liverpool-born boxer Tony Bellew were both on stage to present the award.

Tennis legend Roger Federer was named as Overseas Sports Personality of the Year on the back of an eighth Men’s Singles title win at Wimbledon this summer.

Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery, who lost a lengthy battle with neuroblastoma in July, was presented posthumously with the Helen Rollason Award.

England’s under-17 World Cup winners were also recognised as Manchester City strike Phil Foden was named as the Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Farah received 83,524 votes for the main award, over 3,000 more than Rea while Peacock edged out boxer Anthony Joshua in third place by just 18 votes.

“It is pretty amazing and hard to think about,” said Farah, who accepted the award in London.

“I didn’t imagine I was every going to win this but I anything can happen. If you work hard you can achieve your dreams.

“I am sorry I couldn’t be there. My kid has been not well.

“I just cannot believe I have won.”
