Forecast heavy snow could see this weekend’s Merseyside Derby thrown into jeopardy.
An Amber weather warning is currently in place spanning across Sunday, December 10 stating ” A spell of heavy snow is likely over parts of Wales, the Midlands and parts of Northern England on Sunday.
Road, rail and air travel delays are likely, as well as stranding of vehicles and public transport cancellations. There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off.”
At around 6am on Sunday morning, the region is expected to be at the centre of a blizzard that is predicted to last around three hours.
There is a potential that the match at Anfield between Liverpool and Everton will have to be postponed due to falling snow and freezing temperatures posing a risk to public safety and travel chaos.
The first people who will assess the situation on Sunday morning will be the FA and the referee who will assess the pitch surface. This is unlikely to be an issue thanks to under pitch heating.
Merseyside Police will ultimately have the final say as to whether the game will go ahead as they are required to take in to consideration the safety of travelling fans.
The force will assess the situation on the morning of the game and all fans and clubs will be given “plenty of notice” over any decision to postpone the game.
Chief Superintendent Chris Markey said: “We will be working closely with the club over the next 24 hours. We will be monitoring the weather forecast and assessing any travel disruption.
“At this stage the game against Everton is planned to go ahead.
“We will be meeting with the club early tomorrow morning and fans will be updated as soon as possible.
Should the 229th meeting between the sides be postponed then it must be played at the earliest possible opportunity.
Both clubs would be required to work together to agree on time and then ask permission from the Premier League. Should there be any disagreement then the league will have the final say.
