Liverpool are step closer to leaving Melwood after plans to flatten their existing training ground were approved.
A meeting of Liverpool City Council’s planning committee approved the proposal which will see 160 homes built on the current Melwood site despite hundreds of objections from local residents.
It is believed that the land will sell from around £8 million and that money will be used to help fund a £50m move to Liverpool’s new planned base in Kirkby.
Councillors heard first from LFC’s planning consultants, who claimed the club had been at a disadvantage of other Premier League rivals due to not having a combined facility.
By launching a combined facility, Melwood would no longer be required.
Whilst Melwood is not a public site, the club have agreed to mitigate the loss of the playing fields by making a £150,000 donation to the nearby public Walkers Playing fields.
City planning officials had recommended the plan be approved, stressing that it was only an outline application to approve the principle of housing and access routes.
