Everton FC youngsters ready to step into Merseyside derby fold, says Martinez

Roberto Martinez believes Tom Davies and Callum Connolly would not let anyone down if forced into action for Everton in tonight’s Merseyside derby.

The impressive pair were just about the sole positives for the Blues in a dour 1-1 draw with Southampton last weekend, playing with a composure on debut that belied their tender years.

And Martinez, who has seen his defensive line decimated by injuries in recent weeks, believes both Davies and Connolly are mentally ready for such an important match.

He said: “I thought Tom Davies was very impressive and Callum Connolly showed his versatility

“That was a big positive from the weekend. It was probably the most stretched we’ve been.

“I think they are ready mentally, with the young players we are in safe hands.”

Versatile England youth defender Connolly is perhaps best placed to take advantage of a growing Everton injury list, with first choice defenders Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman certain to miss Wednesday night’s game and Leighton Baines a major doubt.

Neither Connolly nor Davies was risked in last night’s under-21 win against Manchester City at Goodison Park, perhaps hinting at their potential inclusion in Martinez’s squad for the derby.

He added: “They had that character to play in the first team and that is not an accident; we have that at the football club and it shows the programmes they are under to get them to that opportunity.

“If there are any minutes or places to be filled up by young payers we are in safe hands.”
