IPCC probe teen head injury in police incident

Merseyside Police are currently under investigation after a teenager suffered a head injury.

The incident took place between the junction of Walton Breck Road and Burleigh Road North at around 11.15am on Monday, with the 17-year-old reportedly involved in a road collision.

However witnesses have claimed that the victim was injured when hit on the head as he cycled away from officers.

Police watchdog the IPCC have confirmed that they have launched a probe into the incident after they were notified by the Merseyside force.

A spokesperson said: “We have begun an independent investigation after being notified by Merseyside Police of an incident earlier today in Anfield where a teenage cyclist was taken to hospital following police contact.

“We understand it happened at around 11.15am at the junction of Walton Breck Road and Burleigh Road North.

“The cyclist, a male believed to be aged 17, suffered a head injury.

“IPCC investigators were deployed to the scene this afternoon to begin gathering evidence and are attending the police post incident procedure.”
