Unsworth keen on taking Everton hot seat

David Unsworth says it was an easy decision to take up the role of caretaker manager at Everton once more.

The under-23 boss has stepped into the role on an interim basis following the departure of Ronald Koeman on Monday.

The Dutchman was sacked following a dismal start to the campaign that has seen the Blues manage just three wins in all competitions this season.

His last game in charge proved to be Sunday’s humiliating 5-2 defeat to Arsenal at Goodison Park.

Unsworth was named as interim boss, commencing with an away trip to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, on Tuesday and says it was an easy decision to make.

“It’s not a difficult decision; it’s a very easy decision to make,” he said.

“I spent the afternoon with the chairman yesterday, we spoke everything, Everton, from how many games, individual players, plans for the short-term and long-term.

“We spoke about everything; I had a great chat with the chairman. But it’s not a difficult decision to stand as Everton manager.

“If you’re an Evertonian it makes you very proud.”

It is not the first time that Unsworth has found himself in the role, having taken it up following the sacking of Roberto Martinez in May 2016.

That stint saw him take charge of the Toffees for their final game of that campaign, with his side running out as 3-0 winners against Norwich City.

At the time Unsworth had stated that he would like the job on a permanent basis and has reiterated that stance this time around.

“I’ll repeat myself from when I was stood here 18 months ago, who wouldn’t want this job? It is a wonderful football club with amazing fans,” he added.

“It is a top job for absolutely any manager, myself included.

“The chairman, Farhad and the board have given me an opportunity to hopefully get a run of games where performance levels go up and we produce some wins as well.

“From that, performances and results will dictate any future for me as Everton manager. I want to manage and this is an amazing job to be the manager of.

“I think the time has come to say that and I make no secret of it. I want to manage.

“However, I do have a wonderful job that is a challenge and I do enjoy it. What will be will be. I will do my best every day and we’ll try and win a few football games.”
