Walton Prison’s governor has been removed from his post following a snap inspection.
A document, originally leaked to the echo, states that Peter Francis has left the prison for “operational reasons” following an unannounced inspection by HMIP. Francis had been in the role for three years.
Details of the inspection revealed that standards within the prison are very poor with cockroaches, dirty toilets and damp walls.
An anonymous source provided a letter to the echo which states “I have confirmed through discussions with HMPPS (Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service) officials that his removal was for operational reasons following a recent unannounced inspection by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons for England and Wales (HMIP).”
It has been long reported that standards within the prison are very low with prisoners spending their days within overcrowded and dirty cells.
The report states “Many prisoners spend long periods of time confined in cells that are cramped and decrepit, often with little to stimulate them.”
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “Peter Francis is no longer the governor of HMP Liverpool.”
