Philippe Coutinho named in Ballon d’Or shortlist

Philippe Coutinho has been named in the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or.

Coutinho’s inclusion in the 30-man list comes on the back of an impressive run of form for Liverpool that recently caught the attention of Barcelona.

A number of bids were rejected from the Catalan giants over the summer as the Reds held firm despite a £114 million final offer.

The Brazil international also made an impressive start to this season for Liverpool, contributing to a combined four goals in his first six appearances.

Joining Coutinho on France Football’s shortlist for the best player accolade is compatriot Neymar, who sealed a world-record move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo continue to dominate the billing while the 25-year-old’s former Anfield team mate Luis Suarez has also been nominated.

Only Michael Owen has won the European Player of the Year award in Liverpool colours on the back of a treble-winning campaign in 2001.

Kenny Dalglish was crowned runner-up in 1983 while Steven Gerrard (2005) and Fernando Torres (2008) both finished third in the competition.
