Liverpool to reject Christmas Eve plans for Arsenal trip

Liverpool will oppose plans to reschedule their trip to Arsenal for Christmas Eve.

Sky Sports are considering pushing back the Reds’ clash at the Emirates Stadium back by 24 hours from its originally scheduled date of December 23.

Premier League games were last played on Christmas Eve in 1995 but the broadcasters’ plans could force Jurgen Klopp’s side to be the first to do so since.

Liverpool are understood to be planning to resist attempts to move the clash, which would have a knock-on effect to their current Boxing Day plans.

Swansea City are due to travel to Anfield on December 26 but would see that game also pushed back a day to the 27th due to the Christmas Eve fixture.

Liverpool have played on December 24 just twice in their history, last in 1966 against Chelsea while the other previous occasion was in 1955 against Hull City.

Fan action group Spirit of Shankly have already responded to the likely upheaval rescheduling the Arsenal game would cause to supporters travelling to London.

“It is our understanding that Arsenal have been asked if they can staff such a fixture and the Metropolitan Police have been asked for their view,” read a statement.

“We hope that common sense will prevail and that both clubs, police, television companies and the Premier League decide against such a move.

“Changing to Christmas Eve would have an untold impact on staff and supporters, particularly away supporters. Supporters would be faced with the prospect of getting home in the early hours of Christmas morning.

“We are in the process of contacting the relevant personnel to make it clear that it would be completely unacceptable to expect supporters to travel back from the capital at that time.

“Like the corresponding fixture [in August], no thought was given to away supporters travelling to the match.”

Arsenal fans encountered disruptions in their journey to the game at Anfield last month due to Euston Station’s closure during the Bank Holiday weekend.
