FA cover up Tranmere’s ‘Super White Army’ banner

The Football Association covered up a Tranmere Rovers banner during an England Women’s match.

Prenton Park hosted the World Cup qualifying win between the Lionesses and Russia on Tuesday, with the hosts recording a comprehensive 6-0 win.

But the FA has confirmed it took the decision to obscure a sign declaring ‘Super White Army’ after several players shared an image of it on social media.

The sign had appeared on the Bebington Kop stand yet was obscured when the Lionesses won their last game under their now former manager Mark Sampson.

Lucy Bronze, who previously played for Everton and Liverpool Ladies, wrote in her Instagram post: “FYI Tranmere Rovers’ nickname is ‘Super White Army”.

Tranmere’s supporters club has questioned the FA’s logic, refuting potential suggestions of racial connotations with the National League side’s banner.

“We are proud of our club colours, as are all fans up and down the country… and will continue to use the chant at our games going forward,” chairman Mark Bartley told BBC Sport.

“It is not remotely racist – it is simply a reference to the white shirts that our team wear.”
