Barry Bennell to stand trial over child sex abuse

Former football coach Barry Bennell will stand trial over 50 child sex abuse charges in January.

Bennell worked with Crewe Alexandra’s youth team as well as Manchester City and Stoke City when the alleged abuses took place during the 1980s and 1990s.

The 63-year-old appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via videolink from HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes to enter his pleas.

Bennell was remanded in custody by the South Cheshire Magistrate Court in June and has already pleaded not guilty to 20 of the charges brought against him.

They include 42 counts of indecent assault, 11 counts of buggery and two accounts of attempted buggery relating to underage boys over the past 40 years.

A trial date for Bennell has been set for January 8 next year.
