Lucas Leiva’s decade-long association with Liverpool will come to an end today.
The midfielder arrived in Italy on Sunday ahead of a £5 million move to Lazio after their bid was accepted by the Reds towards the end of last week.
He missed Friday’s friendly draw with Wigan Athletic as he weighed up the decision to call time on being the longest-serving current player at Anfield.
Lucas faced an uncertain future with Liverpool amid their interest in RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita and the emergence of other figures in the current pecking order.
Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can are ahead of the 30-year-old while Philippe Coutinho’s likely deployment in the role next season further limited his prospects.
Jurgen Klopp admitted after Liverpool’s game at Wigan that he was unsure whether Lucas would secure a move away from Merseyside.
He said: “I’m not 100 per cent sure what I can tell you about it because I’m not sure in this moment.
“But I think in all respect for Lucas and his outstanding time at Liverpool we should talk about facts, not about rumours. We have to wait, I’m not sure.
“Maybe something [will] happen, maybe not. It’s like last year and a half a year ago. We will see.”
The former Brazil international underwent a medical with Lazio on Monday morning as part of the finishing touches of his switch to Italian capital.
Originally signed from Gremio in his homeland, Lucas made 346 appearances for Liverpool between 2007 and 2017, scoring seven times.
