Nathaniel Clyne withdraws from England squad

Nathaniel Clyne has pulled out of the England squad for their games with Scotland and France.

The Liverpool defender was originally called up by Gareth Southgate for next month’s double header but forced to withdraw on Tuesday due to injury.

Southgate confirmed that a back problem was the cause of Clyne’s departure with Tottenham duo Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker now set to vie for his place.

Clyne was one of only two Reds players in the squad, leaving Adam Lallana to fly the flag for the club within the national team set-up for the upcoming fixtures.

Liverpool’s other representatives were overlooked as Daniel Sturridge continues to struggle with a hip problem while Jordan Henderson is still recovering from a foot injury.

England are currently preparing for their World Cup qualifier against Scotland at Hampden Park on June 10 before facing Les Bleus in Paris just three days later.

Clyne had racked up more minutes than any of his Anfield team mates this season, missing just one Premier League game from 41 in all competitions.

Since making his international debut back in 2014, during a 3-1 over Slovenia, the full-back has won 14 caps for his country and featured at Euro 2016.
