Violet-Grace Youens’ hit-and-run killers jailed

Two men have been jailed with the hit-and-run killing of Violet-Grace Youens.

The four-year-old died after a collision with a car in St Helens on March 24, which also left her nan Angela French seriously injured.

Aiden McAteer was sentenced to nine years and four months in prison for causing both death and serious injury by dangerous driving during the incident.

Dean Brennan, 27, was also ordered to serve time behind bars as he was jailed for six years and eight months for aggravated vehicle taking and assisting an offender.

In addition to their sentences, the pair will be banned from driving upon leaving jail with McAteer suspended for 10 years and Brennan ineligible for six years.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how McAteer had fled to Amsterdam in the immediate aftermath of the fatal incident before later pleading guilty.

Both the 23-year-old and Brennan had stolen a Ford Fiesta from a local community worker before travelling at speeds of 80mph in a 30mph zone.

McAteer is said to have lost control of the car on Prescot Road and hit a kerb, where it crashed into both Violet-Grace and her grandmother.

CCTV footage showed the defendants subsequently leaving the scene on foot, which sparked a manhunt and a public appeal to McAteer by his family.

Detective Inspector Jason Pye said: “Today McAteer and Brennan were sentenced for their part in the collision which led to the death of Violet-Grace.

“Their actions in leaving the scene of their collision following the crash and continuing to attempt to evade justice rightly shocked and angered the local community and the people of Merseyside as a whole.

“I hope that their prison sentences will give them time to reflect on the consequences of their actions – not only on Violet-Grace’s family but their own families as well.

“Although no sentence, however long, can ever bring Violet-Grace back I hope that it gives her family some sense of closure and allows them to instead reflect on the love and happiness their daughter brought them.

“I would also like to pay tribute to Violet-Grace’s family for their courage and dignity throughout this whole process and also to the team of detectives who worked round the clock to find the people responsible and bring them to justice.”
