A man is undergoing surgery after being shot in Norris Green.
Police are investigating reports that shots were indiscriminately fired at around 5.38pm on Friday from the window of a black Audi with a number of people inside.
Following the incident on Landford Avenue, a local man believed to be aged 30 took himself to Aintree hospital with a gunshot wound his torso.
Crime investigators are currently in attendance at the scene to carry out forensic examinations, and extensive house-to-house enquiries are being carried out.
Officers will also be seeking CCTV footage in a bid to identify the offenders, whilst patrols have been stepped up in the area to reassure the local community.
Detective Inspector Steve McGrath said: “It is obvious from the reckless actions of these individuals that they don’t have any consideration for ordinary members of the public who were in the area at the time of the incident.
“These people don’t think about the consequences of their actions, and in fact they probably don’t care.
“But we do, and we need to get the people responsible off our streets because the safety of our communities is paramount.
“I would urge any members of the community who know who is responsible, or who has any information which could help us, to contact us urgently.
“This shooting took place in broad daylight on a residential street and we are fortunate that no-one else has been injured and that we are not dealing with a fatality.
“The vast majority of people in the community will be appalled by this horrific incident and we look to them to help us by providing information to make the streets safer.
“I would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm Merseyside Police’s commitment to tacking gun crime.
“The force is relentless in its pursuit of those who use firearms on our streets and we will act on information received which identifies the offenders and where guns are being stored.
“The investigation in in its early stages and detectives are working hard to establish the motive and circumstances leading up to this incident.
“If anyone witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious that could help us investigate this incident then please contact our gun crime hotline on 0800 230 0600 or leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
