Barwick to lead Liverpool’s Commonweath bid

Former FA chief Brian Barwick has been named as the chairman of Liverpool’s Commonwealth Games bid.

Barwick currently chairs both the Rugby Football League and National League but will also head up the city’s efforts to win the UK rights to host the games.

The 62-year-old, who spent three years as head of the Football Association between 2005 and 2008, was originally due to lead the efforts for 2026.

But Durban’s withdrawal from the event in five years’ time due to funding has seen Barwick brought in as Liverpool prepares to challenge several UK cities.

Everton director Denise Barrett-Baxendale has also been enlisted as deputy chair, with Birmingham and Manchester also vying to host the forthcoming games.

“The bid’s for 2026, but 2022’s come onto the market,” said Barwick.

“We’d be stupid not to really have a serious look at it. If we go for it, we’ll get it. We’re up for it. It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to chair the bid.

“I was born, raised, educated in Liverpool, I’ve got an amazing fondness for the place and never lost my admiration or affection for it.

“Wherever I go, I try and be an ambassador for it. To lead this bid is perfect.

“I’ve worked on about four Commonwealth Games as a broadcaster so I understand the rhythm and the beat of the Commonwealth Games.”
