A teenager has been jailed for nine years for repeatedly stabbing a police officer in Huyton.
Callum Ashes knifed PC Daniel Hughes seven times during the attack in Westmorland Road on September 13 last year after he had resisted arrest.
The 19-year-old claimed that he was acting in self-defence when the undercover officer and and his colleague PC Michelle Deveraux had attempted to detain him.
But the jury at Liverpool Crown Court rejected the claim and found Ashes guilty of wounding with intent after PC Hughes was hospitalised with four stab wounds.
Mr Justice Davis, presiding, said: “The streets of Merseyside, like many other streets in this country, are beset by young men carrying knives.
“The carrying of knives is the scourge of society at the moment.
“Those who commit serious offences against police officers will receive severe punishment.”
