Merseyrail to meet RMT in bid to end strikes

Merseyrail bosses will meet with union chiefs in a bid to avoid further strikes.

Rail guards staged a 24-hour walk out on Monday causing disruption to several routes on the service, which was completely halted for a three-hour period.

Transport union the RMT balloted for strike action at plans by Merseyrail to introduce driver-only operated trains (DOO) across their network from 2020.

An estimated 220 jobs were feared to be lost in the £460 million overhaul.

The row over the changes was intensified as Merseyrail made a last-ditch attempt to block this week’s industrial action at the High Court but saw their bid rejected.

However the company is now preparing to meet with the RMT at the beginning of next week in efforts to end the stand-off between the two parties.

Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde, Merseyrail’s managing director, said: “We are very pleased that the RMT has accepted our proposal for talks.

“I am hopeful that they will take these discussions seriously and get behind the decision made by local politicians last December to order these fantastic new trains, which will be much safer than the ones they replace.”
