Shots fired at West Derby leisure centre

Detectives in Liverpool are investigating after shooting in a West Derby car park.

The incident took place in the car park of the Peter Lloyd leisure centre shortly after 3.50pm on Thursday, when a car was reported to have collided with a motorbike.

A red Vauxhall Corsa was involved in the crash with a red and black Honda CBR bike, with the rider of the latter proceeding to shoot at the other vehicle.

Police attended the scene and have recovered bullet casings and the motorbike.

A search of the area was undertaken and enquiries with hospitals have established that no-one has presented with gunshot injuries.

Following the incident, the car was driven left towards West Derby Road while the rider of the bike left the scene on foot in the direction of Muirhead Avenue.

The car was later recovered on Castlefield and detective damage consistent with a firearm discharge found to have been caused to its door.

Detective Inspector Steve McGrath said: “The investigation into this incident is in its very early stages.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have seen someone acting suspiciously in and around Bankfield Road shortly before or after the incident to contact us, as any information they have could be vital to our inquiries.

“Thankfully nobody appears to have been injured but to use a firearm in a car park is clearly incredibly reckless and we are determined to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

“The full circumstances are unclear at present and we are keeping an open mind as to the motive.”

Crime scene investigators are carrying out forensic examinations at the scene and witnesses are being spoken to.

High visibility patrols have been stepped up in the area to reassure the public.
