PC Dave Phillips’ killer fails in reduced sentence bid

The killer of PC Dave Phillips has failed in a bid to see his sentence reduced.

Clayton Williams ran over the Merseyside Police officer, 34, during a high-speed chase in Wallasey while driving a stolen pick-up truck in the early hours of October 5, 2015.

Last year Williams was ordered to serve 20 years behind bars for Phillips’ manslaughter but attempted to appeal the ruling at a hearing on Wednesday.

However judge Sir Brian Leveson threw out the request, insisting that the 20-year-old’s jail term reflected his role in the father-of-two’s death two years ago.

He said: “In our judgement he cannot have any complaint with the sentence passed upon him.

“It was thoroughly deserved.

“Severe punishment will be imposed on all those who kill or injure police officers.”
