Liverpool bid to host early Commonwealth Games

Liverpool could host the Commonwealth Games four years earlier than planned.

The city is vying alongside Birmingham to hold the games in 2026 but may see its bid brought forward as Durban be forced to withdraw as the 2022 hosts.

South Africa’s sports minister games admitted that financial difficulties are set to see the country relinquish its role as Commonwealth hosts in five years’ time.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson has written to UK sports minister Tracey Crouch about the city stepping into the void in the event of Durban’s withdrawal.

He said: “We knew that Durban was in trouble so we met with government officials last week in which we made it clear we would be very keen to host the games in 2022.

“I have also written to Tracey Crouch and assured her that we would be ready for that date.

“I am very confident that the city will be able to cope with the demands of holding the games then.

“These games give us a great opportunity to regenerate the north of Liverpool and create a lasting legacy.”
