Two women were attacked by a gun-wielding gang in their West Derby home.
Emergency services were called shortly after midnight on January 7 following reports that three men had forced their way into a property on Goldcrest Close.
The women inside the house were assaulted, with one of the men claimed to have been carrying a shotgun while another was also in possession of a handgun.
Both victims were taken to hospital and have since been discharged but have been left extremely distressed by their ordeal.
The offenders had their faces covered but were described as white with one being noticeably taller than the others.
One was thought to be wearing a dark coloured slim fit bubble coat, similar to a North Face quilted jacket, the second in dark clothing.
A third, the tallest offender, a dark coloured wax jacket possibly two tone with the dark section being across the shoulders.
Detective Chief Inspector Bev Hyland said: “We now believe the offenders arrived at the scene in a dark coloured car, possibly an Audi A7.
“Following the incident, they left the scene in this car and travelled out of Goldcrest Close into Fir Tree Drive North, crossed the junction at Deysbrook Lane and onto Oak Lane and into Princess Drive.
“We believe the car then travelled onto Yew Tree Lane. It’s possible this car was travelling at high speed.
“Despite the early hour, we know that Yew Tree Lane is a particularly busy route for taxi drivers and people travelling from West Derby to Huyton or Stockbridge Village.
“I’d appeal for anyone who might have been in the area at the time, who might have saw this car to get in contact.
“The two women involved in this incident have been deeply affected by what happened to them and we are working hard to identify those responsible so they can be brought to justice, but we need the assistance of the public.
“I would ask anyone who has any information, no matter how small to get in contact.
“Maybe you saw a car travelling at speed in this area or three men dressed in dark clothing acting suspiciously, we would urge you to get in contact.”
The scene has been forensically examined and house to house enquiries carried out. CCTV from the surrounding area is continued to be examined.
Detectives are keeping an open mind as to the motive for this incident, but are treating it as targeted.
