Asmir Begovic could be set for a surprise return to Everton.

The veteran goalkeeper arrived in 2022 during Frank Lampard’s tenure following the conclusion of his four-year spell with Bournemouth.

He made ten appearances in all competitions before leaving Goodison Park last summer when his previous contract expired and swiftly joined QPR.

But the Blues are in talks to re-sign Begovic after his deal with the west Londoners was not renewed despite featuring 46 times for the Hoops.

Now 37, the Bosnia and Herzegovina international is seen as a viable backup option to first-choice stopper Jordan Pickford due to his wealth of experience.

It is expected that Begovic would also offer support to new goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer in the same way that Andy Lonergan previously did at the club.

Mercer recently took over duties from Alan Kelly, who left the blue half of Merseyside after seven years, and previously worked under Sean Dyche.

The Liverpool native was first enlisted by Dyche at Burnley and joined Everton as short-term cover while Kelly recovered from undergoing knee surgery.
