Jeremie Frimpong has become Liverpool’s first signing of the summer.

Frimpong’s move from Bayer Leverkusen on Friday was confirmed a matter of hours after Trent Alexander-Arnold sealed an early departure from Anfield.

However the Netherlands international does not arrive as the right-back’s direct replacement despite being capable of operating in the position.

The Premier League champions triggered Frimpong’s €35 million (£29.5M) release clause at the BayArena as they eye fresh additions this summer.

And the former Manchester City prospect admitted that the chance to join the Reds was a ‘no-brainer’, especially after an earlier move failed to materialise.

“I think it went quite easy,” said Frimpong.

“Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer. For me, it was like, ‘Whatever you guys do, just get this done’, [speaking to] my agents: ‘Just get this done.’ It went quite smoothly.

“You always want to play for the top teams as a footballer, as a kid. Of course when I was younger and Liverpool first came, that was a no-brainer as well.

“But due to transportation and all these sorts of things, I had to go a different way. And look at me now, so it has worked really well.”

Meanwhile Arne Slot’s side have stepped up their pursuit of Florian Wirtz by lodging a £109M bid for Frimpong’s now former Leverkusen teammate.

Liverpool are currently running unopposed for the playmaker’s signature after Bayern Munich and Manchester City dropped out of the race in recent weeks.

However the Bundesliga outfit are expected to hold out for a deal closer to their previous €150M (£126M) valuation of the Germany international.
