FA investigate Liverpool-Man City clash fallout

The Football Association are set to investigate events around Liverpool’s win over Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp’s side edged out the reigning Premier League champions but Sunday’s Anfield encounter was marred by a series of unsavoury scenes.

Reds chiefs condemned ‘vile’ chants related to Heysel and Hillsborough being aired in City’s allocation, where assorted graffiti was found on the concourse.

English football’s governing body supported that statement and will explore whether the taunts were discriminatory, the only threshold for punishment.

The visitors, meanwhile, alleged that coins were thrown in the direction of manager Pep Guardiola after VAR disallowed Phil Foden’s would-be opener.

City are also expected to raise the issue of their team bus being vandalised as it departed Anfield following the match, with objects piercing its windscreen.

Liverpool were previously fined €20,000 by UEFA in 2018 after fans inflicted similar damage to City’s coach before their Champions League quarter final.

Merseyside Police confirmed on Monday that they are working with both clubs to tackle several of the incidents in the fallout from last weekend’s showdown.

A statement read: “We have been made aware that offensive and disorderly behaviour had taken place during the Liverpool v Manchester City game, including allegations of coin-throwing and offensive graffiti was sprayed in the away section. We have also been made aware of an allegation that a Manchester City team coach was damaged.

“However, no incidents have been reported to us or that items were thrown at the coaches and we are now working with MCFC to establish the circumstances of what happened and the allegation that damage was caused.

“Such behaviour will not be tolerated, and we are working with both clubs to identify and bring to justice anyone found responsible for committing offensive and disorderly behaviour.”
