Jurgen Klopp has credited his wife with helping extend his stay at Liverpool.

Klopp penned a fresh extension on Thursday which will tie his future to the Anfield club until 2026, two years after his existing deal was set to run.

The 54-year-old’s decision to re-commit to the Reds came after he rejected suggestions he would remain in charge beyond the previous 2024 expiry.

But Klopp’s revealing comments last month offered fresh hopes to owners Fenway Sports Group that he could be convinced to make a longer term stay.

Also joining the German in pledging their long-term futures to the quadruple-chasing side are trusted assistant coaches Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz.

Klopp, who will celebrate 10 years at the helm in 2025, revealed that both his wife Ulla had Lijnders had been key sounding boards for his ultimate decision.

He said: “The most important contract in my life I signed is the one with Ulla.

“That’s where it started again. We sat in the kitchen at the table and Ulla said: ‘I can’t see us leaving in 2024.’ And I was like: ‘What?!’

“When I thought about it then it was clear I needed to have one more really important conversation and that was the one to Pep Lijnders.

“He is probably the main reason for it because he is a real energiser – this man is on fire and our connection is beyond football things.

“When he said: ‘Oh, yes, I am in,’ then it was clear that we are open for any kind of talks. That’s why we sit here now.”
